Gerhard Sallinger thanks customers for another successful year in divisional keynote at Intergraph 2010

Earlier today, Gerhard Sallinger, president of Intergraph Process, Power & Marine, led an inspiring keynote address, “Better Solutions for Better Facilities,” in which he gave the annual update of the division, its strategies, its performance, and its work to provide real value to its customers. He shared how Intergraph SmartPlant and SmartMarine Enterprise solutions enable customers to design, build, and operate safer, more reliable, and more efficient plants, offshore structures, and ships.

Sallinger then acknowledged the 2010 Intergraph Sapphire Circle winners. The Sapphire Circle program allows the company to recognize the top 1 percent of its global employee workforce through nominations submitted by fellow employees. Through their exceptional standards and work ethic, the employees receiving this award support and “live” the overall Intergraph mission, vision, and core values, every day. Sapphire Circle recipients from the Process, Power & Marine division include:

• Davide Guzzi – Italy
• Santosh Raghavan –Singapore
• Narahari Sanga – India

Next, Sallinger discussed the rules-based design capability in Smart 3D, which can act as a “watchdog” by incorporating safety rules into the design system. Smart 3D can also facilitate more error-free design, reducing the need for late and sometimes poorly documented modifications to be made during construction.

Joe Morray, president of Trinity Technologies Corp., led a safety roundtable including Raul Hermosillo, manager, Site Projects and Turnaround Benchmarking, IPA Global; Russ Novak, director, ARC Advisory Group; Patrick Holcomb, executive vice president, business development, Intergraph Process, Power & Marine; and Sallinger. They discussed a number of industry trends and factors involving safety efforts.

Greetings from Las Vegas!

Intergraph 2010 is in full swing, with the majority of Process, Power & Marine sessions beginning today. One of the highlights was the awarding of the Platinum Pipe automation contest.

Samsung Heavy Industries won first prize for its entry that automatically places a ship's accommodation area into a SmartMarine 3D model. This tool automatically adds 3D equipment, furniture, and joiner wall panel. The greatness of the automation is that it allows SHI to finish the joiner plan quickly and pass the 3D model to other disciplines. The automation was submitted by Mi Ja Kwak.

Second place was awarded to Darren Litherland of Grenland Group in Norway. There was a tie for third place between L.S. Soo of Hyundai Engineering and Haibo Zheng of Chinergy. Congratulations to the winners, and look for videos on these automations soon.

Bangkok Post features Intergraph’s next-generation engineering software

Bangkok Post, an English-language daily newspaper published in Bangkok, Thailand, ran an article featuring Intergraph’s next-generation engineering software. Intergraph senior management, Tom Doran, Executive Vice President of PP&M in Asia Pacific and Chin Kong Far, Vice President of PP&M in Southeast Asia, along with Harsh Sethi, CEO of Intergraph’s Thai partner, Neon Infotech, were interviewed for the article.

Intergraph’s suite of Smart solutions adopts a data-centric approach for accurate, integrated and reusable data that helps to increase usability, efficiency, and productivity, as well as increases safety in plant facilities. Harsh Sethi, CEO of Neon Infotech, recognized that there is a growing trend in the industry to build a single source of data for the entire enterprise and Intergraph’s Smart solutions can help organizations to achieve this.

Tom Doran, Executive Vice President of PP&M in Asia Pacific, acknowledged the challenges facing owner operators today and highlighted that Intergraph has evolved into a knowledge-driven engineering software provider that allows use of rule-driven data that can be configured, changed and modified to serve business requirements. There is strong demand for next-generation engineering software in the Southeast Asian region, particularly in Thailand, as pointed out by Chin Kong Far, Vice President of PP&M in Southeast Asia.

Crucial considerations during the design stage of a power plant

Crucial considerations during the design stage of a power plant—how does software help to master the challenges posed.

Each major engineering discipline would insist there are several considerations that are crucial at any given time during the design stage. Overall, making sure all major plant components are designed and accounted for, and that each engineering group affected by those components has the most up-to-date information is one of the most important considerations.

The physical layout of the plant must be completed and communicated, but also making sure that shared data about major pipelines, the instrumentation and controls of those pipelines, the electrical loads of major equipment inside the plant and the thousands of miles of cabling connecting them is probably the most crucial consideration of all.

Software helps in this endeavor by allowing designers to reuse data that has already been entered by someone else. This can reduce or eliminate keyboard entry errors, but more importantly, software can also aid in the notification of those designers when the data is changed due to a new design parameter or material change situation. Power plant designers spend much more time reacting to change and validating data than they do in creating the data in the first place. Software helps to reduce the negative impacts of those changes by notifying users earlier in the process so they can avoid purchasing incorrect components or producing incorrect drawings.
