Petrobras gains 100% interest in Cascade field

Offshore Magazine reports that Petrobras has purchased Devon Energy’s 50% stake in the Cascade field in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico, giving the company 100 percent participation in the field. Petrobras will begin operations in the Cascade field in the middle of this year.

Keppel FELS Delivers First Rig of 2010

Marinelink.com reports that Keppel FELS Limited (Keppel FELS) has delivered Ensco 8502, the third of seven Ensco 8500 Series semisubmersible (semi) drilling rigs it has been contracted to build exclusively for Ensco International (NYSE:ESV).

Construction lead time for Ensco 8502 was reduced by 1.1 million man-hours, as compared to the first rig in the Series. This represents a 15% boost in efficiency. 

When the Ensco 8500 Series is completed, Keppel-built rigs will make up 30% of the leading driller’s premium fleet. Construction of the next four rigs remains on schedule with expected deliveries extending from the fourth quarter of 2010 into 2012

Plant Design Consolidation

An article on ENR.com (Engineering News Record) highlights the Intergraph acquisition of COADE® Holdings Inc., a software provider for multiple plant design and engineering analysis disciplines.

Huntsville, Ala.-based Intergraph closed the deal on Jan. 4, 2010 to purchase Houston-based COADE Holdings Inc., according to Patrick Holcomb, executive vice president of global business development in Intergraph’s process, power and marine division. COADE sold a majority stake of the firm in 2007 to Insight Venture Partners. No financial terms were disclosed. Intergraph was taken private in 2006.

Holcomb says the acquisition extends Intergraph’s market and its ability to serve smaller projects with COADE’s CADWorx, a modular AutoCAD-based 3D plant-design system. The deal also includes COADE’s CAESAR II, the pipe-stress analysis tool, as well as PV Elite for pressure-vessel design, and TANK, for tank design. Holcomb says the deal will have “virtually no impact” on distribution or support, and that the COADE team will stay on.

Siemens names chief for its U.S. division

Effective Jan. 18, 2010, Eric Spiegel has been named the new president and CEO of Siemens Corp., the company’s U.S. arm. Spiegel, previously a senior vice president and senior partner at Booz & Co., will succeed George Nolen.

Spiegel brings 25 years of experience in energy, manufacturing and utility and the health care industries, which precisely match New York-based Siemens’ core business sectors, energy, industry and health care.

“We are delighted to have someone with Eric’s broad strategic experience to lead our company in the U.S., which is our single largest market,” said Siemens Corp. Chairman Peter Solmssen, who also is a member of the Siemens AG Managing Board. “Siemens is a complex, global organization, and Eric brings the right combination of product, customer and policy expertise, along with strategic organizational experience.”
